The UCSD VPN creates a virtual private connection over public networks

using encryption and other security checks to help protect against computer data transmission interception. It also helps ensure only authorized users can access campus networks. With VPN, network computing traffic between your remote machine (off-campus or wireless) and campus passes over a single, encrypted connection, and your remote machine has a UCSD IP address.

Uscd VPN Services

  • AnyConnect – Cisco software VPN client which offers the maximum capabilities and performance.
  • EasyConnect – web-based VPN portal at https://vpn.ucsd.edu, which allows secure access to many campus services, electronic library resources, and remote desktop computing without requiring the installation of a software client.

Connect to Uscd Vpn using one of these options:

Enter your Active Directory (AD) username and password.

Select Easy Connect from the Group drop-down menu, and click Sign On.

You now can access campus services by clicking a link from the list, such as:

  • Campus Exchange (Outlook Web Access)
  • Campus Network Status
  • Link Family (FinancialLink, TravelLink, etc.)
  • SysWiki (for campus system administrators)

You can also access services by typing a URL in the Address field.

iPhone/iTouch/iPad 6.0.x and above

Set up your iPhone or iPad to access the VPN.

To reset your Active Directory (AD) username or password, go to https://adweb.ucsd.edu/adpass or contact your department’s system administrator.

VPN Pools

The VPN service offers the ability to create department-specific pools, which can be used to control access to departmental resources. Please contact your IT support staff for additional information on accessing or using pools for your department. If you do not have IT support staff, then contact the ITS Service Desk.

VPN Use During Temporary Remote Work Directives Spring 2020

In response to the surge in remote workers, IT Services has significantly upgraded the capacity and performance of the VPN service. As such you should feel free to rely on the VPN anytime you are working remotely. When connected to the VPN using the 2-Step Secured – allthruucsd group, all of the traffic to and from your home or remote computer has malware filtered exactly as any on-campus computer does. However, the VPN should not be used when you are not working, such as when a family member is using your personal computer. Note that most academic and student services do not not require you to be logged in to VPN. Faculty and staff are encouraged to use the VPN when working on administrative activities. Configuring Android 4.x to Access the UCSD Virtual Private Network (VPN)

 

Follow these steps to connect your Android 4.x to the UCSD virtual private network (VPN), which lets you create protected connections to UCSD’s network from remote locations.

Before you begin, you must have:

An Android phone with version 4.x firmware or later installed

Your UCSD Active Directory username and password

Your Active Directory username is usually the first part of your UCSD e-mail address before the @ symbol. If you forget your password, see Getting or Changing UCSD Passwords.

 

  1. Install Cisco AnyConnect

Using your Android phone, download the AnyConnect client in the Google Play store. Search “Cisco AnyConnect”.

Click INSTALL.

 

  1. Enter VPN Connection

Open the AnyConnect client

Choose Connections

Choose Add New VPN Connection

Description: UCSD

Server Address: vpn.ucsd.edu

Click Done

 

 

 

  1. Authenticate with UCSD VPN using DUO 2-Step Authentication

On the AnyConnnect home screen, turn on AnyConnect by selecting the Off toggle (it will change to On)

A second window will appear. Select your desired connection profile from the Group drop-down menu:

2-Step Secured – allthruucsd – Route all traffic through the UCSD VPN. Use this when accessing Library resources and CMS website staging links. This is the preferred method.

2-Step Secured – split – Route only campus traffic through the UCSD VPN. All other traffic goes through your normal Internet provider.

In the Username field, enter your Active Directory (AD) username

In the Passcode field, use the following to authenticate through DUO (See Two-Step Login: VPN for further details):

If you receive DUO push notifications on your mobile phone enter:

yourADpassword,push

If you receive a DUO phone call to authenticate, enter:

yourADpassword,phone

If you use a DUO token to generate a passcode enter:

yourADpassword,6digitpasscodefromtoken

Click Connect

 

 

 

  1. Disconnect

Launch the app and click on Add New Connection.

Where your networks are displayed, click on VPN disconnected.

Choose the vpn.ucsd.edu (user) option.

Before you begin, you must have:

An iPhone/iPad with version 10.x firmware or later installed

Your UCSD Active Directory username and password

Your network username is usually the first part of your UCSD e-mail address before the @ symbol and is only 8 characters in length. If you forget your password, see Getting or Changing UCSD Passwords.

 

iPhone/iPad App

Step 1: Download Cisco AnyConnect app from the App Store

In the App Store, search “Cisco AnyConnect” and download the Cisco AnyConnect client.

Step 2: Add a VPN Connection

Click on “Connections.”

Click “Add VPN Connection…”

Fill out the requested information:

Description: UCSD VPN

Server Address: vpn.ucsd.edu

Click “Save”

When prompted if you would like to “Add VPN Configurations”, click “Allow.”

Step 3: Connect to the VPN

On the main page, toggle the AnyConnect VPN button to the ON position

Select your desired connection profile from the Group drop-down menu:

Download and configure the new UCSD Virtual Private Network (VPN) AnyConnect client on your Windows 10 Desktop and Tablet for a conventional installation.

Notes:

You must log into your computer with administrator rights.
